Choosing a Beginner Surfboard

It is astonishing that some surfers still do not know how to properly choose the surfboard to suit there needs, so many variables have to come into consideration when choosing the board that will not only insure maximum performance but also perfect comfort, to help them catch those big juicy waves.  At On The Beach Surf Shop we pride ourselves on our variety of board in addition to the accessories we offer; so it should be no problem to find the right board on our website.  So how do you start looking at choosing the right board?

If your looking at buying your first ever surfboard, you are likely on a budget and are looking for a good deal to start properly; surfboards do vary in performance in relation to price however we would strongly advise starting on a budget board, learn the ropes and start moving onto the more expensive ranges that you can buy here.  Your first surfboard should really be the maximum size and quite thick; leave the thin smooth – funky looking boards to surfers who know exactly what their doing; lets be clear – your not going to learn properly on a difficult board from the get go.  So go large, and thick remember it!

Why do this you say? Well not only will it help with flotation, it will add comfort and build confidence in your ability to keep buoyant on the waves; so just stick with it! Trust us we know!  As a basic rule we would recommend that the average board size for a beginner surfer would be around 6-7 feet; 17-22 inches wide (base this on your own comfort) and also make sure its nice and thick, we would say 2 inches should be enough – if you find it difficult at that level go abit deeper.

So what about shape; well to be honest, your not going to look cool from the get go so dont try to get the cool looking board for that reason – you WILL be falling all over the place, and it will not any points to your desirability! To say the least!  You wont be turning or doing anything too fancy within your first few months so forget about fins and tail shapes.

The main point were trying to make is buy a cheap, big thick ass board to start your adventure into the great white;  you will then beable to move onto some more finesse driven boards.  Get choosing!
